ABOUT AKUMAL
Most
visitors believe Akumal has some of the most beautiful
beaches on the Yucatan Peninsula. It is a lovely stretch
of privately owned land on the Mexican Caribbean coastline
that was settled and developed by Don Pablo Bush. Señor
Bush was an archaeologist who discovered some of the
most spectacular shipwrecks along the coast. The shipwrecks
may still be viewed by divers, and many of the artifacts
are in local museums. Akumal is a Mayan word which
means "Place
of the Turtle"; the area is known for its nesting turtles,
spectacular Mayan ruins, white sandy beaches, and crystal
clear waters.
The
barrier reef that protects Akumal, stretching almost the
entire length of the Yucatan, is one of the longest reefs
in the world. The reef keeps the waters in front of the
beaches calm and beautiful, making it fantastic for swimming,
snorkeling, diving, wind surfing, or any other water sport
and is particularly safe for children.
Daytime
activities in Akumal are as varied as your imagination.
Besides basking in the sun or swimming in the warm Caribbean
waters, there is almost any water sport you might want.
The beach bars are great places to meet locals and other
tourists in search of new friendships. There are a few
boutiques in Akumal along with an interesting selection
of mercados up and down the coastline. Akumal is perfectly
situated for many day trips in either direction. The spectacular
Mayan ruins of Tulum and Coba are located just south, the
ferry to Cozumel is only 20 miles north at Playa del Carmen,
and if you want to check out Cancun, it's a one hour drive.
Within a 10 mile drive, you'll find Puerto Aventuras which
offers activities such as golf, tennis, a marina, and nice
selections of restaurants and shops.
Akumal
is internationally known for its world class diving and
clear warm waters without the dangerous currents. The dive
shops in Akumal and in the surrounding areas are fully
equipped and PADI qualified to meet your every diving need.
Complete dive trips can be easily arranged with night diving,
cenote (shallow cave) diving, and deep cave diving for
the more adventurous divers. Fantastic snorkeling, deep
sea fishing, and a variety of day trip excursions are available
as well.
